On this page I hope to show how to start rings, chains, split rings and self closing mock rings without tying a knot. I have never had any 'luck' with the magic thread trick so have devised these methods for myself. When it comes to finishing off a piece of work I tie a single knot and then, using a self threading needle, I work the ends into the 'heads' of the doubles. |

Starting a ring. Take the thread over the hand as if starting a ring as usual. Take the end round the core thread running from the shuttle as shown. Work the first few ds over the tail to hide it and hold it. |

Starting a chain. Take the end of the ball thread through the ring JUST BEFORE completely closing the ring. Finish closing the ring which will hold the 'tail' safely in place while working several chain ds over this 'tail' which will again hide it and hold it.. |

Starting a Split Ring. Work the first half of the ring as normal using the method of starting a ring without a knot as above. Take the second shuttle and tie a knot close to the first ds made on the first half by taking the tail end UNDER the core thread, over the core thread then under the Wsh2 thread and and back through the loop - see diagram opposite. Make sure that the 'tail' of this second shuttle lies along the core thread as shown. Tat over this 'tail' as before using the first half of the ds first to hide and hold it. By using the first half ds first it will complete the the first ds in the count. Remember that the second half of the SR always starts with the second half of the ds first and the knot in this case will form the first half of the first ds. |

Starting a Self Closing Mock Ring. Take Wsh2 and wrap the thread over the fingers of the left hand as if preparing to start a chain (or SCMR). Take Wsh1 thread and place it over Wsh2 thread at right angles - see (a). Place the 'tail' of Wsh2 thread up over Wsh1 and also make the SCMR starting loop with Wsh1 ready to begin the first element - see (b). Work the first part of the SCMR covering the 'tail' of Wsh2 with the ds of the first part of the pattern but, just before changing to Wsh2 to work the first ring, gently pull the tail of Wsh2 to hold Wsh1's thread firmly. Continue with SCMR as usual. For the following chain or ring – tat over the short end of Wsh1 |

Starting a Chain. Place chain thread over the hand as normal and take the shuttle thread at right angles over this. See (d) below. Tat first half ds over the chain end and then take the shuttle end back below this - see (e). Next tat over both ends with a second half ds. Continue to cover both ends for a few more ds. Pull both short ends before cutting and continuing. |
