Doodles # 1 - © Jane Eborall

All four of these doodles use Victorian 'sets'.  The sets are very easily made by making the given number of first half of the ds followed by the given number of second half of the ds.   The interesting part of these patterns is that in doodles a, b & c the bead will appear to be in the centre of the ring with a small 'heart' shaped dip in the ring providing an interesting design element.  Using 'sets' is a way of making a 'mock' dimpled ring.

Doodle (a) – 1 shuttle

seta = 4 first half of double  setb = 4 second half double

8 beads on shuttle (1 small, 1 large, 1 small etc ending with 1 large).  Also needed are 4 beads for adding to joining picots.

Before starting each ring move large B to back of hand.

R1:       4 – 4 seta B setb 4 – 4  Cl move B along thread to lie close to base of ring

R2:       4 +B(R1) 4 seta B setb 4 – 4  Cl move B along thread to lie close to base of ring

R3:       4 +B(R2) 4 seta B setb 4 – 4  Cl move B along thread to lie close to base of ring

R4:       4 +B(R3) 4 seta B setb 4 +B(1st p R1) 4  Cl move B along thread to lie close to base of ring  T & C

Doodle (b) – 1 shuttle (numbers of beads added to Lp's is for guidance only)

seta = 4 first half of double  setb = 4 second half double

7 small, 1 large, 1 small beads are added to shuttle thread before starting.

Place 1 small, 1 large, 1 small bead at the back of the hand when starting R1.

R1:       2 B 2 Lp(1 ½”) 2 Lp(1”) 1 Lp(½”) 1 seta B setb 1 +(third Lp with 7 beads added to picot) 1 +(second Lp with 15 beads added to picot) 2 +B(first Lp with 25 beads added to pictot) 2 B 2

Place remaining 6 beads at back of the hand before starting R2.

R2:       2 B 2 B 2 B 2 Lp(1/4”) 2 B 2 B 2 B 2

If beads are added to Lp on R2 and then attached to an ear finding this doodle can be made into an earring.

Doodle (c) - a sort of bug!!  1 shuttle and chain thread

seta = 4 first half of double  setb = 4 second half double

^ = very small picot

Decide how long the finished bug will be and add to the shuttle thread a large bead for each section of the body followed by two beads for the eyes.

Add three beads for each section of the body to the chain thread.

R1:       3 B 2 – 4 – 2 B 1 ^ 2

Ch:       3

R2:       2 +(^ R1) 1 seta B setb 2 ^ 5

*Ch:     2 B 2 B 2 B 2 +(^R2)

R3:       2 seta B setb 2 ^ 5

Repeat from * as many times as required

Ch:       2 B 2 B 2 B 2 +(^ final R) 8  T & C

Doodle (d) – Giraffe

seta = 4 first half of double  setb = 4 second half double  VLp = very long picot (12")

1 bead on shuttle thread.

Start head and place nose bead at back of hand before starting.

R1:       4 – 2 – 4 B 9

Ch:       seta setb (6 repeats)

R2:       9 – 4 VLp 4 VLp 4  T & C

Cut VLp on R2 and using one half of the cut picot work a chain by finger tatting seta setb (6 repeats)  T & C.  Do not pull up too tight or the legs will bend!

Repeat for second VLp
