In all four of these patterns a down picot is used (Dp). This can include a bead and is made simply by making 2 first half ds (B) then two second half ds. In two of the doodles (j & l) Victorian 'sets' are also used). Please see technique section for adding beads to long picots without having to guess the length of the picot!! Beads have been used but each doodle is fine without! Abbreviations for all four doodles Dp down picot two first half ds B two second half ds ^ very small picot Lp Long picot a long picot which is joined later in the pattern see tips and techniques - adding beads to long picots B bead in place of picot seta = 4 first half of ds setb = 4 second half of ds |

Doodle (k) Note In this pattern the Lp is made and followed immediately by two first half ds (start of Dp). A picot is then made (with a B added) this is then followed by two second half ds (this has now formed a Dp). The Lp is then joined. There are 3 ways to join if you do not want to use beads see ideas at the end of these instructions.
Materials 2 shuttles, no. 20 thread, beads. To Wsh2 add 1B for upper wing, 3 for lower wing, 3 for tail, 3 for next lower wing and 1 for second upper wing. A further 14 beads are needed to add to Lps. Knowledge of SCMR needed
SCMR1: 4 [R 10 Lp (see hint above) adding 7 beads Dp +(Lp) 8 2] 2 [R 2 +(p on last R) 4 BBB 6] 4 BBB 4 [R 6 BBB 4 2] 2 [R 2 +(p on last R) 8 Lp adding 7 beads (see hint above) Dp +(Lp) 10] 4 Cl SR: 6 / 6 Cut leaving ends for feelers to which beads can also be added.
Ideas for joining Lp if beads are not added to it. (a): Simple join to show both sides of the picot (butterfly a) (b): This DLp will need to be shorter than a & c. Join as (a) and then pull upper part of the picot causing part closest to the work to tighten against the top of the Dp. (c): Twist DLp several times before joining. |
