Hedgehogs - © Jane Eborall

The family of hedgehogs consists of a large and a small 3D hedgehog and a flat one (the one that didn't get to the other side of the road!!).  The largest one measures 1 1/2" and the small one is just over 1".  The flat hedgehog is approximately 1 1/4".  All use split chains and split rings.  The split chains in the 3D versions can be replaced with ordinary chains (with a centre vsp).  This will only add to the amount of ends to be sewn in.  The split chain on the flat hedgehog cannot be avoided and also has picots on the split half.  This design also starts initially with a mock picot.  All could be used as brooches or stand alone figures.  I leave the rest to your imagination and ingenuity.  I also feel sure that they could easily be enlarged by adding more rings and rows.

Materials

No. 20 thread.  Two shuttles.  One bead of 5mm diameter (nose) and two of 3mm (eyes) for each hedgehog.

Large hedgehog - (mum and dad).  All picots on chains for this hedgehog are 8mm long.

Centre ring – two shuttles.  Wsh1

R          1 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 1.  Pull core thread down through the middle of picot 4 and add large black bead (nose).  Put shuttle through the loop to retain the bead and close ring.  The bead should be larger than the ring and so it will lie on the top.  Tie a double knot to anchor the bead in place.  See fig. 1.  Leave a gap the size of a picot before starting the SR of the next roundSee fig. 2
