Each of the following variations of this motif is started by covering a small plastic ring (cabone ring) with a knot resembling the ds. There are also alternative centres if you do not wish to use a plastic ring (instructions below abbreviations). The ring is covered in the same way as the second half of the split chain. I have drawn up instructions which you can find here. Beads can be added to very long picots using this method.
Materials and skills required:- No. 20 thread, seed beads, ⅝” plastic ring (cabone), knowledge of split rings, clovers on split rings, using beads. |

NB Following are two alternative centres. Centre for five pointed versions. Centre Ring – Sh1 with 2 extra beads to those required for the version you intend to work. Chain thread (¾ yard required). R: 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 Cl Move 1 B close to base of R. Take chain thread through this B & Rw Ch: vsp 5 Lj + B (p on R) – 5 Lj + B (next p on R) – 5 Lj + B (next p on R) – 5 Lj + B (next p on R) – 5 + vsp @ start of Ch. Move B to lie next to join just made and take Ch thread through the bead. Continue as for rest of motif. Centre for six pointed versions. Centre Ring – Sh1 with 2 extra beads to those required for the version you intend to work. Chain thread (¾ yard required) R: 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 Cl Move 1 B close to base of R.
